This study aims at finding out (1) if the use of video materials in improving students’ listening skill is effective and (2) if the students give positive attitude towards its use in teaching listening skill. the study focuses on the problems that mostly encountered by the students: inability to focus, difficulty in determining the topic of the text, and difficulty in identifying supporting details from the text. this experimental study used pretest-posttest control group design. the instruments used were listening tests, observation sheet, and questionnaire. the tests result was analyzed by applying paired-samples t-test, while the observation and the questionnaire were analyzed by calculating their grand means. the result shows that 88% of the students in the experimental group achieved the score of 60 and above in the posttest, and the result of the t-test (sig. 2-tailed) was 0.000. in addition, the grand means achieved by the group in the observation and in the questionnaire were respectively 2.78 and 4.12. based on these results, it can be concluded that using video materials is effective in terms of both the output and process, and that the students demonstrated a positive attitude towards its use. therefore, teachers are suggested to use video materials in teaching listening skill.
