This qualitative research aims at investigating teacher’s strategy in coaching english debate in english debate class in sman modal bangsa, aceh. it also finds out factors that trigger modal bangsa senior high school students’ achievements in english debate competition. the participants of this research were 17 students and 4 teachers. the instruments for this research were interview guide and observation sheet. the data were then analyzed by using conventional content analysis and document analysis. the findings of the study showed that the coach used some approaches and methods of teaching in coaching english debate class. the approaches used by coaches are open students’ mindset, grouping the students and creating good relationship. there are four kinds of method of teaching used by the coach, such as teacher center, cooperative learning, plus minus interesting and practice debate process. besides useing some approaches and method of teaching, there are some factors that trigger students achievements in english debate competition such as recruitment process, coaches’ background, students’ motivation, school environment and school facilities, classroom’ atmosphere, teamwork / team relationship, students’ background, parental / community involvement, and invited a professional debater. hence, in coaching english debate students, it is suggested that teachers should recruit members of english debate students by giving standard tests. in order to make the learning process interesting, it is better to make students understand about the advantages of english debate and hopefully the teachers apply all of these methods to develop their progress in learning english debate.
