Abstract atu lintang is a damaged forest area despite many existing regulations. the existence of illegal logging activities has an impact on people's lives, such as floods, landslides, and the wild animals start coming to citizen residents , the large of number ogf actors illegal logging is not in accordance with the number of cases tried in court. atu lintang sub-district has the largest critical land compare to other sub-districts in central aceh. the number of disasters also increase every year. central aceh does not have the qanun that specify on the protection of forests. this study aims to determine how the capabilities of the government of central aceh to address the problem of illegal logging in atu lintang sub -district. this research uses qualitative descriptive. the necessary data in this study were obtained through field research conducted by interviewing informants and important documents of central aceh in particular atu lintang sub -district, and library research done by reading textbooks, legislation and other reading materials related to this research. the results of this study indicate that the government is not able (capable) in addressing the problem of illegal logging. it is because the lack of commitment of officers working in the field, as obtaining permits that are considered difficult, socialization, reforestation is done not based on need. the constraints faced by the government is the emerges of bad execution in implementing a bad policy. bad policy is the inability of the government to formulate appropriate policy. another obstacle emerged from the community is that the low le vel of public understanding of the importance of protecting the forest. advice to the government to make policies in accordance with the principles of green thought and run with a vengeance, to furthe improve the communitya sense of concern for the environment keywords: government capability and illegal logging. ayu mahara, 2016 aceh central district government capability in addressing the illegal logging in problem in atu lintang sub-district. faculty of social and political secience, university of syiah kuala (xi,72), pp., bibl., app. (cut maya aprita sari s.sos, m.soc., sc)
