Abstract
The TikTok platform is one of the social media platforms used by its users to disseminate, receive, and seek information regarding the Rohingya ethnicity. However, it is undeniable that the spread of negative information in Indonesia itself is considerably high. This study aims to describe how the people of Banda Aceh receive negative narratives about the Rohingya ethnicity on social media, as well as how their media literacy shapes the way they make sense of these narratives. This research employs Stuart Hall's reception theory. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a phenomenological approach. The findings reveal that the people of Banda Aceh are not homogeneous in their responses to these negative narratives. The majority of informants occupied a negotiated position, wherein they tended to consider humanitarian sympathy while remaining influenced by socio-economic concerns arising from repeate exposure to negative content. Additionally, an oppositional position was also identified, driven by the ability to critically verify information across multiple media sources. This study confirms that the dominance of rejection narratives on TikTok does not fully represent the broader societal social attitudes, but is rather influenced by algorithmic mechanisms that shape echo chambers. Not only that, this research shows that critical media literacy can grow through everyday social verification practices, not just depending on the level of formal education.
