Abstract
The squid Uroteuthis duvaucelii is one of the economically valuable fishery commodities widely found in Indonesian waters, including the Northern Waters of Aceh. However, scientific information regarding the morphological and morphometric characteristics of this species in the region remains very limited. This study aims to identify the morphology and morphometric characteristics of the squid Uroteuthis duvaucelii in the Northern Waters of Aceh, as well as to determine the pattern of the relationship between mantle length and body weight. Sampling was conducted from August to December 2025 at two locations, namely Pulo Aceh and Banda Aceh. A total of 68 squid samples (30 individuals from Pulo Aceh and 38 individuals from Banda Aceh) were identified and their morphometric characters were measured using traditional morphometric methods, which were chosen for their simplicity in measuring basic morphometric characters directly and have been widely used in similar studies. The analysis of the relationship between mantle length and body weight used linear regression with the equation W = aLb. The morphological identification results showed that the squids obtained belonged to the species Uroteuthis duvaucelii with characteristic elongated cylindrical mantle, rhomboid fins, reddish cream color, and equipped with eight short arms and two long tentacles. Morphometrically, squids from Banda Aceh tended to have larger body sizes compared to those from Pulo Aceh, with average mantle lengths of 85.8 mm (Banda Aceh) and 83.1 mm (Pulo Aceh). The mantle length size distribution in Banda Aceh (58-113 mm) had a wider range compared to Pulo Aceh (71-100 mm), with the highest frequencies in the 82-89 mm class (14 individuals) and 76-80 mm class (10 individuals), respectively. The relationship between mantle length and body weight showed a negative allometric pattern with b = 2.7631 (Pulo Aceh) and b = 2.3955 (Banda Aceh), indicating that mantle length growth is more dominant than body weight gain. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.7605 (Pulo Aceh) and 0.7740 (Banda Aceh) indicated a strong length-weight relationship.
