Abstract

This study aimed to investigate collaboration between vocational high schools and the business and industrial sectors (Business and Industry/BI) in enhancing the competencies of vocational high school students in Banda Aceh. Specifically, it examined the partnership programs, their implementation, evaluation mechanisms, and the factors that support and constrain the effectiveness of the collaboration. A qualitative research approach was employed, involving 12 informants comprising school principals, vice principals responsible for public relations and curriculum affairs, heads of vocational study programs, and students from State Vocational High School 2 Banda Aceh and State Vocational High School 3 Banda Aceh. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and subsequently analyzed using the interactive model of data analysis, which encompasses data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. The findings indicated that the partnership programs were systematically established through competency needs assessment, strategic identification of industry partners, and alignment of the curriculum with industry requirements. Their implementation encompassed collaborative partnership initiatives, curriculum integration, student preparedness, and teacher professional development, all of which contributed to strengthening both students' technical competencies (hard skills) and interpersonal competencies (soft skills). The evaluation process was conducted regularly through coordination meetings, student performance reports, and systematic feedback from industry partners. The success of the collaboration was primarily supported by strong institutional commitment, effective communication, and active support from the schools. In contrast, its implementation was constrained by students' insufficient preparedness and disparities between educational provision and industry expectations. The study concludes that effective school–industry collaboration should continuously enhance student preparedness and maintain curriculum alignment to better meet labor market demands. Keywords: School–Industry Collaboration, Business and Industry, Student Competencies, Vocational High Schools.
