FARID ILHAM, PENGARUH PERLAKUAN KIMIA (ALKALISASI DAN HIDROLISIS ASAM) TERHADAP KEKUATAN TARIK DAN KETAHAHAN SOBEK FILM KOMPOSIT PVA-AMPAS KOPI. Banda Aceh Fakultas Teknik - Teknik Mesin,2026

Abstract

Spent coffee grounds are an organic waste material with the potential to serve as a filler in Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)-based composite films, creating a more environmentally friendly material. This study aimed to analyze the effects of chemical treatments—specifically alkalization using NaOH solution and acid hydrolysis using H2SO4 solution—on the tensile strength and tear resistance of PVA/spent coffee ground composite films. The composite films were fabricated using a casting and evaporation method, with spent coffee ground filler contents varying at 5%, 10%, and 15%, utilizing both untreated and chemically treated fillers. Characterization was conducted through visual observation, tensile testing, and tear testing. The results indicated that composites containing untreated filler exhibited superior performance compared to those with alkalization or hydrolysis treatments. The highest tensile strength (9.667 MPa) was observed in the PVA/AK-NP-10 variant, while the lowest (1.693 MPa) was found in the PVA/AK-Alk-5 variant. Regarding tear resistance, the highest value (9.494 N) was obtained with the PVA/AK-NP-15 variant, and the lowest (2.475 N) with the PVA/AK-Alk-5 variant. Alkalization and hydrolysis treatments tended to reduce mechanical properties due to structural changes in the filler that affected the interaction between the filler and the PVA matrix.
