Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and abundance of microplastics in sediments and to determine the grain size characteristics of sediments at Mantak Tari Beach and Ie Leubu Beach, Pidie Regency. Sampling was conducted at six sampling points, three at each beach using the coring method with a 2.5-inch diameter PVC pipe to a depth of 15 cm in the intertidal zone, yielding a total of 18 sediment samples. Sediment grain size analysis was carried out through mechanical sieving, while microplastic identification was performed via density separation using NaCl solution and observation under a binocular microscope. Grain size analysis results indicated that Sediment grain size analysis indicated that sand was the dominant fraction at all sampling stations (97.90–99.95%). According to the Folk triangular classification, four stations were classified as gravelly sand ((g)S), whereas two stations were classified as sand (S). Microplastics were found in a total of 11 particles at Mantak Tari Beach and 9 particles at Ie Leubu Beach, with uneven distribution among stations, influenced by the proximity of sampling locations to river estuaries, fishing activities, and local hydrodynamic conditions. Two types of microplastics were identified: fiber (90%) and fragment (10%), with fiber being the most dominant type, which is associated with the high level of capture fisheries activity in Pidie Regency. The presence of microplastics at both locations indicates that plastic pollution in the coastal area of Pidie Regency has already occurred and potentially threatens marine ecosystems and food chains in the region.
