Abstract

Social media has become one of the primary sources of information for the public, including the emergence of homeless media such as the Instagram account @infobandaaceh, which actively disseminates local news in Banda Aceh. This study aims to examine how the public perceives the credibility of this account and how trust in the account is established within the context of social media use. The study employs the Media Credibility Theory proposed by Flanagin and Metzger, focusing on four dimensions: believability, accuracy, bias, and completeness. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted, with data collected through semistructured interviews involving six informants from three generations: Generation Z, Generation Y, and Generation X. The participants were selected using purposive sampling based on specific criteria, namely being active Instagram users and followers of the @infobandaaceh account. The findings indicate that most informants demonstrate a moderate level of trust in the account, primarily using it as a source of timely and relevant initial information while continuing to verify important information through other media sources. Among the four dimensions of media credibility, accuracy and bias received the most positive evaluations, whereas completeness requires improvement, as the information provided tends to be brief and does not consistently cite its sources. Meanwhile, the believability dimension suggests that public trust is developed through a process of evaluating and verifying information. This trust is influenced by media-related factors, including the account's timeliness, relevance, consistency, and reputation, as well as audiencerelated factors such as users' social media experience and their habit of verifying information. The study also reveals generational differences in patterns of trust: Generation Z tends to accept information more readily, Generation Y adopts a more balanced approach in evaluating information, while Generation X is more selective in developing trust toward social media-based news accounts.
