Abstract
The increasing demand for electrical energy and the growing integration of renewable energy sources have driven the need for more optimal operation of power systems. One of the methods used to address this challenge is Unit Commitment, an optimization technique that determines the operating schedule of generating units to meet load demand at minimum operating cost while satisfying system operational constraints. In this study, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is integrated into the Unit Commitment problem using the Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) method, which is solved using the SCIP solver through the Python programming language. The modeled system consists of 10 thermal generating units, 4 photovoltaic (PV) units, and 8 BESS units with charging and discharging efficiencies ranging from 90% to 95%. Simulations are carried out over a 24-hour period under two scenarios: a system without BESS and a system with BESS. The simulation results show that the BESS stores energy when the generated power exceeds the load demand and releases the stored energy when the load demand increases. This reduces the amount of energy that must be supplied by the thermal generators, resulting in lower thermal generator energy usage. Consequently, the total operating cost of the system decreases from USD 336,953 in the scenario without BESS to USD 329,642 in the scenario with BESS. Therefore, the integration of BESS achieves an operating cost saving of USD 7,311, equivalent to approximately 2.17%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that integrating BESS into the Unit Commitment problem using the MINLP method effectively reduces the energy supplied by thermal generators while also lowering the overall operating cost of the system.
