Abstract
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm that can accumulate in the bodies of aquatic organisms, particularly fish. Their presence in fish poses potential negative impacts on the organisms' physiology and on human health. This study aimed to identify microplastic accumulation in Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) specifically regarding type, color, and size within the gills and digestive tracts of specimens from the Krueng Lamnyong River in Syiah Kuala District, Banda Aceh City. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive methods and presented via graphs and percentages. The results revealed a total of 27 microplastic particles, with higher accumulation in the gills (16 particles; 59.26%) compared to the digestive tract (11 particles; 40.74%). Regarding type, the microplastics consisted of fragments, fibers, and films. Films were the dominant type in the gills (46.67%), whereas in the digestive tract, films and fragments appeared in equal proportions (50.00% each), with no fibers detected (0%). In terms of color, blue microplastics predominated in the gills (43.75%), followed by transparent (31.25%), yellow (18.75%), and red (6.25%) particles. Conversely, yellow microplastics predominated in the digestive tract (45.45%), followed by blue (36.36%), while transparent and red particles each accounted for 9.09%. Regarding size, the 0–20 µm range was dominant in the gills (60.00%), whereas the 20–40 µm range predominated in the digestive tract (41.67%). The findings indicate that the Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis) specimens used in the study were contaminated with microplastics in their gills and digestive tracts.
