Abstract
Paper brick is an environmentally friendly construction material made from a mixture of paper pulp, sand, cement, and natural binders. This study aims to analyze the effect of vegetable gelatin as a cementitious binder on the compressive strength of paper bricks, evaluate compliance with SNI 03-0349-1989, and determine the optimal composition of vegetable gelatin as a partial cement substitute. The vegetable gelatin used is derived from tapioca flour that has undergone a gelatinization process with hot water to form a thick and sticky consistency that functions as a bioadhesive. Test specimens in the form of single bricks measuring 5 cm × 10 cm × 20 cm were made with a volume composition of (cement + vegetable gelatin) : aggregate of 1 : 3, then compacted using a hydraulic press and tested for compressive strength at the ages of 3, 14, 21, and 28 days in accordance with ASTM C67-08. The mixture variations used consisted of paper brick without vegetable gelatin (PB) as a control, as well as paper bricks with vegetable gelatin mixtures of 20% (PBG20), 30% (PBG30), and 40% (PBG40) by weight of cement. The results showed that the greater the percentage of vegetable gelatin used, the lower the resulting compressive strength value. The 28-day compressive strength for the PB variation was 27.43 kg/cm², PBG20 was 7.89 kg/cm², PBG30 was 7.50 kg/cm², and PBG40 was 5.52 kg/cm². Based on SNI 03-0349-1989, the PB variation falls into strength class IV, while PBG20, PBG30, and PBG40 do not yet meet the SNI standard. The addition of vegetable gelatin also reduced the brick's density from 1.24 g/cm³ in PB to 0.89 g/cm³ in PBG40, and caused deformation in the form of cracks on the sides of the bricks after compressive strength testing. The optimal composition obtained was a ratio of 80% cement : 20% vegetable gelatin (PBG20), yielding the highest compressive strength of 4.72 kg/cm².
