Abstract
The academic challenges faced by students vary each year, requiring academic resilience to overcome them. Academic resilience is the ability to effectively cope with and adapt to academic challenges, thereby increasing their chances of academic success; it is demonstrated through an individual’s cognitive, behavioral, and emotional responses. This study aims to examine differences in academic resilience among students at Syiah Kuala University based on their year of study. This study employs a comparative quantitative design. The respondents in this study were undergraduate students at Syiah Kuala University from their first year of study through their seventh year, totaling 335 students, with the following breakdown: 60 in the first year, 48 in the second year, 48 in the third year, 48 in the fourth year, 46 in the fifth year, 44 in the sixth year, and 41 in the seventh year, selected using the Disproportionate Stratified Random Sampling. Academic resilience was measured using the Academic Resilience Scale-30 (ARS-30) by Cassidy. The hypothesis test using Welch’s ANOVA indicated a significant difference in academic resilience based on year of study, with a p-value of 0.044 (p < 0.05). A follow-up test using the Games-Howell test on the total scores showed no differences across all academic year groups; however, at the dimensional level, a significant difference was found in the perseverance dimension between the first and fifth academic years (Mdiff = -3.54, p = 0.025), with first-year students demonstrating higher perseverance than fifth-year students. Based on these results, it can be concluded that year of study is a factor that distinguishes the academic resilience of students at Syiah Kuala University, although the difference is weak and were found only in the perseverance dimension between first- and fifth-year students.
