Abstract
ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze how cultural representations in Yuni's film create and reinforce social pressures on women in the context of Banten society. Social pressures on women in Banten society are shaped by patriarchal culture, social norms, culturalreligious legitimacy, and social control passed down through generations. These conditions lead to women being expected to adhere to certain social standards, such as marrying at a young age, prioritizing domestic affairs, maintaining family honor, and limiting personal freedom to meet societal expectations. This study connects these social conditions with the representations depicted in Yuni's film. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative approach utilizing Stuart Hall's theory of representation and Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis. Data were obtained through observation of scenes, dialogue, visual expressions, and the social context within the film. Data analysis was conducted through open coding and axial coding to identify themes, sub-themes, and meaningful relationships that represent social pressures on women. The results of the study indicate that the representation of social pressure in Yuni's film is presented through the normalization of early marriage, the placement of women in household affairs, the unequal position of women in decision-making, the control of women's bodies through cultural myths and educational institutions, and the psychological pressure that limits women's freedom to make life choices. The film also depicts how social pressure is produced and reproduced through the family, community environment, educational institutions, and the patriarchal culture that is considered normal in Bantenese social life. Furthermore, the film depicts women's resistance through the negotiation of meaning, rejection of patriarchal norms, and efforts to achieve personal freedom.
