Abstract
Chicken meat is a highly favored source of protein by the Indonesian people. According to the National Socioeconomic Survey data, per capita consumption of broiler chicken meat continues to increase annually by 7.87%. This study aims to isolate and identify Salmonella sp. in chicken meat in Banda Aceh Traditional Markets. This study is an observational laboratory method using descriptive analysis. Chicken meat samples were taken from five traditional markets in Banda Aceh. Chicken meat suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella sp. was isolated into a preenrichment medium, namely Buffer Peptone Water (BPW), and incubated for 24 hours. Next, the culture was transferred into an enrichment medium, namely Selenite Cystine Broth (SCB), and incubated for 18 hours. Then, it was re-planted on a specific Salmonella Shigella Agar (SSA) medium and incubated for 24 hours. After incubation, 23 colonies suspected of being Salmonella sp. were obtained from 30 samples examined. Then, from these colonies, biochemical tests showed negative Salmonella sp. but other bacteria were detected such as two colonies of Klebsiella pneumoniae, three colonies of Proteus vulgaris, two colonies of P. mirabillis, three colonies of Escherichia coli, and one colony of Shigella sp.. Thus it can be concluded that Salmonella in this study was not found in chicken meat sold in the traditional market of Banda Aceh, but other bacteria were detected such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, P. mirabillis, Escherichia coli, Shigella sp.
