Abstract

KNOWLEDGE, PERCEPTION, AND PRACTICE OF HUNTING DOG OWNERS TOWARDS RABIES VACCINATION IN RANAH PESISIR DISTRICT, PESISIR SELATAN REGENCY, WEST SUMATRA ABSTRACT Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease that remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia, especially in areas with a high population of dogs. Ranah Pesisir Subdistrict, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra, is an area where hunting activities are common, leading to frequent use of hunting dogs and increasing the potential risk of rabies transmission. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, perceptions, and practices of hunting dog owners regarding rabies vaccination in Ranah Pesisir Subdistrict. This research employed a quantitative design with a descriptive analytic approach. Data were collected in December 2025 using structured questionnaires administered to 96 hunting dog owners. Univariate analysis was conducted to describe respondents’ characteristics and their levels of knowledge, perceptions, and rabies prevention practices. The results indicated that most respondents had good knowledge about rabies (62.5%) and positive perceptions toward rabies prevention through vaccination (79.2%). However, rabies prevention practices were generally at a moderate level (44.8%), as some respondents did not vaccinate their dogs regularly and allowed their dogs to interact freely with other animals. In conclusion, although hunting dog owners demonstrated good knowledge and positive perceptions regarding rabies prevention, preventive practices have not been fully optimal. So, continuous education and improved access to rabies vaccination services are needed to strengthen rabies prevention efforts in the community.
