SONYA YOLANDA HALAWA TAMBA, IDENTIFICATION OF GASTROINTESTINAL PARASITES IN WILD SUMATRAN ORANGUTANS (PONGO ABELII) AT THE KETAMBE RESEARCH STATION, SOUTHEAST ACEH. Banda Aceh Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan,2026

Abstract

The Ketambe Research Station in Southeast Aceh district is the oldest research station in Indonesia and has contributed significantly to the understanding of sumatran primates and orangutans. This study aims to investigate gastrointestinal parasites that infect wild sumatran orang utan at Ketambe Research station. Fecal samples were collected from seven sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii) at Ketambe Research Station, with 25 grams obtained from each individual, and examined at the Parasitology Laboratory, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Syiah Kuala, using flotation, sedimentation, modified Ziehl-Neelsen, and formol-ether concentration methods. Identification was conducted based on the morphology and size of helminth eggs and protozoan cysts. The results showed that all samples were positive for gastrointestinal parasites, presenting both single and mixed infections. The parasites identified were Oesophagostomum sp. with a prevalence of 85,7%, Strongyloides sp. at 28,6%, and Balantidium coli at 14,3%. Oesophagostomum sp. exhibited the highest prevalence, which is likely associated with humid environmental conditions and high rainfall that support the development of infective larvae. These findings indicate that sumatran orangutans at the research station are infected by Oesophagostomum sp., Strongyloides sp. and Balantidium coli. Keywords: sumatran orangutan, Oesophagostomum sp., Strongyloides sp., Balantidium coli, Ketambe
