Penelitian ini dilatar belakangi oleh fenomena degradasi karakter religius di kalangan siswa sekolah menengah pertama, meskipun berada di wilayah yang memiliki tradisi keagamaan yang kuat, yaitu kecamatan kaway xvi, kabupaten aceh barat. indikasi tersebut terlihat dari kurangnya konsistensi dalam pelaksanaan ibadah, masih ditemukannya perilaku kurang disiplin, serta pengaruh negatif media sosial terhadap sikap dan perilaku siswa. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mendeskripsikan kondisi karakter religius siswa di smp negeri se kecamatan kaway xvi, dan (2) mendeskripsikan upaya pembinaan karakter religius yang dilakukan oleh sekolah. penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian deskriptif. data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi yang melibatkan guru pai dan guru ppkn. analisis data dilakukan melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) kondisi karakter religius siswa secara umum berada pada kategori baik. hal ini ditandai dengan kebiasaan melaksanakan shalat berjamaah, membaca al-qur’an sebelum pembelajaran, mengikuti kegiatan yasinan dan doa bersama, serta menunjukkan sikap sopan santun, empati, dan disiplin dalam kehidupan sekolah. (2) upaya pembinaan karakter religius dilakukan melalui pendekatan keteladanan guru, pembiasaan kegiatan ibadah, integrasi nilai religius dalam pembelajaran, serta penciptaan budaya sekolah yang religius. faktor pendukung meliputi komitmen guru, kerja sama orang tua, dan lingkungan sekolah yang kondusif, sedangkan faktor penghambat meliputi pengaruh media sosial, keterbatasan waktu pembinaan, serta perbedaan latar belakang pemahaman agama siswa. kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah (1) kondisi karakter religius siswa di smp negeri se-kecamatan kaway xvi secara umum tergolong baik. hal ini ditunjukkan melalui kebiasaan siswa dalam melaksanakan shalat berjamaah, membaca al-qur’an sebelum pembelajaran, mengikuti kegiatan yasinan dan doa bersama, serta menunjukkan sikap sopan santun, disiplin, jujur, empati, dan saling menghargai dalam kehidupan sehari-hari di sekolah. (2) upaya pembinaan karakter religius di smp negeri se-kecamatan kaway xvi telah dilaksanakan secara sistematis dan berkelanjutan. disarankan agar sekolah meningkatkan inovasi program religius, guru terus menjadi teladan yang baik, siswa mampu menjaga konsistensi ibadah, orang tua memberikan pengawasan terhadap ibadah anak di rumah, serta peneliti selanjutnya melakukan evaluasi berkelanjutan terhadap efektivitas pembinaan karakter religius. kata kunci: pembinaan karakter religius, siswa smp, pendidikan karakter, aceh barat.

Abstract
This study was prompted by the phenomenon of a decline in religious character among junior high school students, despite their location in an area with strong religious traditions, namely Kaway XVI Sub-district, West Aceh Regency. This is evident from a lack of consistency in the practice of religious worship, the continued presence of undisciplined behaviour, and the negative influence of social media on students’ attitudes and behaviour. This study aims to: (1) describe the state of students’ religious character in state junior high schools across Kaway XVI Sub-district, and (2) describe the efforts made by schools to foster religious character. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving Islamic Education (PAI) and Civic Education (PPKn) teachers. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that (1) the students’ religious character is generally in the ‘good’ category. This is characterised by the habit of performing congregational prayers, reading the Qur’an before lessons, participating in Yasinan and communal prayer sessions, and demonstrating good manners, empathy, and discipline in school life. (2) Efforts to foster religious character are carried out through teachers setting a good example, the regular practice of religious activities, the integration of religious values into learning, and the creation of a religious school culture. Supporting factors include teacher commitment, parental cooperation, and a conducive school environment, whilst inhibiting factors include the influence of social media, limited time for character development, and differences in students’ religious backgrounds and understanding. The conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) The religious character of students at state junior high schools across Kaway XVI Sub-district is generally classified as good. This is demonstrated by the students’ habits of performing congregational prayers, reading the Qur’an before lessons, participating in Yasinan sessions and communal prayers, and displaying politeness, discipline, honesty, empathy and mutual respect in their daily school life. (2) Efforts to foster religious character in public junior high schools across Kaway XVI Sub-district have been implemented systematically and continuously. It is recommended that schools enhance the innovation of religious programmes, teachers continue to serve as good role models, students maintain consistency in their worship, parents supervise their children’s worship at home, and future researchers conduct ongoing evaluations of the effectiveness of religious character development..
