M Alif Alfayat, ANALISIS PERBANDINGAN SIFAT FISIK DAN MEKANIK KOMPOSIT KAIN DENIM DARI METODE MANUFAKTUR HAND LAY-UP, VACUUM INFUSION DAN COMPRESSION MOLDING. Banda Aceh Fakultas Teknik,2026

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of denim fabric waste as a reinforcement material for epoxy resin-based composites using three manufacturing methods, namely Hand Lay-Up, Vacuum Infusion, and Compression Molding. The physical and mechanical properties were evaluated through Water Absorption (ASTM D570), tensile (ASTM D3039), and flexural (ASTM D790) tests. The results showed that the manufacturing method had a significant effect on the characteristics of the composite produced. In the water absorption test, the Hand Lay-Up method produced the lowest absorption value of 4.41%, while Vacuum Infusion showed the highest value of 7.35%, indicating differences in resin distribution between methods. In the tensile test, the Vacuum Infusion method produced the best performance with an Ultimate Tensile Strength value of 41.54 MPa, a strain of 15.33%, and an elastic modulus of 1901.73 MPa. Similar results were shown in the flexural test, where the Vacuum Infusion method produced the highest values with a flexural strength of 64.48 MPa and a flexural modulus of 1009.97 MPa. Overall, the Vacuum Infusion method produced the best composite quality in terms of mechanical properties, while Compression Molding showed more ductile characteristics and Hand Lay-Up provided intermediate results but with the lowest water absorption.
