CUT NIA KARTIKA, AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING USED BY BILINGUAL SPEAKERS IN TEDXYOUTH@SWA FORUM. Banda Aceh Fakultas FKIP,2026

Abstract

Code switching is a common linguistic phenomenon in bilingual communication, particularly in public speaking where speakers address diverse audiences. This study aims to analyze the types with control modes, and communicative functions of code-switching used by bilingual speakers in the TEDxYouth@SWA Forum. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method and employs the documentation technique to collect data from four selected TEDxYouth@SWA speeches delivered between 2022 and 2025. The findings reveal that out of 327 code switching instances, insertion was the most dominant type (168 cases), followed by alternation (137 cases) and congruent lexicalization (22 cases). Regarding control modes, insertion was consistently managed through coupled control, alternation was divided into coupled and competitive control, and congruent lexicalization was realized through open control. In terms of functions, emphasizing meaning appeared most frequently (263 cases), followed by affective function, solidarity, quotation, and topic change, while ethnic identity did not appear in the data. These findings suggest that bilingual speakers in TEDxYouth@SWA employ code switching strategically not only to clarify meaning and highlight ideas but also to engage and connect with a broad audience.
