RIZKA SAFIA PUTRI, PEMANFAATAN ZAT PEWARNA ALAMI DARI TINTA CUMI-CUMI (LOLIGO SP.) MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK IKAT CELUP PADA PRODUK SARUNG BANTAL HIAS. Banda Aceh Fakultas KIP,2026

Abstract

The use of natural dyes in the textile industry continues to decline because synthetic dyes are considered more practical, despite their negative impacts on the environment and human health. Squid ink, as a safe and environmentally friendly natural dye, is still rarely utilized, resulting in its potential being largely unknown. In fact, squid ink has the potential to produce distinctive colors when applied using the tie-dye technique. This study aims to utilize squid ink (Loligo sp.) as a natural dye through the tie-dye technique on household linen products in the form of decorative pillowcases. The method employed is applied experimental research conducted at the Fashion Design Laboratory of the Family Welfare Education Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University, over a period of four months. A qualitative approach was applied to identify informants’ responses to the decorative pillowcase products dyed with squid ink using the tiedye technique. The study involved five informants selected through purposive sampling, consisting of one tie-dye artisan, two household linen tailors, and two housewives as product users. The research stages included the extraction of squid ink as a natural dye, its application to cotton fabric using the tie-dye technique with alum and ferrous sulfate fixatives, the production of decorative pillowcases, and the evaluation of the results through interviews with the informants. The results indicate that squid ink was successfully used as a natural dye, producing a distinctive gray color with soft and classic characteristics. Products treated with alum fixative produced a bluish-gray color, while those treated with ferrous sulfate resulted in a greenish-gray color. Overall, informants gave very positive responses to the natural appearance of the squid ink dye, the motif designs produced through the tie-dye technique, and the quality of the stitching. The informants considered the products to have aesthetic value, functional feasibility, and high market potential. This study demonstrates that squid ink can serve as an environmentally friendly alternative natural dye and offers innovation in the development of household textile products.
