RIZKY KURNIAWAN, KAJI EKSPERIMENTAL KENYAMANAN TERMAL RUMAH TIPE 36 DENGAN PERBANDINGAN VENTILASI ALAMIAH DAN EAHE (EARTH-AIR HEAT EXCHANGER). Banda Aceh Fakultas Teknik,2026

Abstract

The high reliance on conventional cooling systems has led to increased energy consumption and carbon emissions in the Indonesian housing sector, especially in low-cost type 36 houses. This study conducted an experimental study to compare the performance of an Earth-Air Heat Exchanger (EAHE) system with natural ventilation in creating thermal comfort. The experiment was conducted in a type 36 house in Gampong Kajhu, Aceh Besar, analyzing the effect of an air flow rate of 0.09 m³/s on the system's thermal performance.Data on ground temperature at a depth of 0.2-1.0 m, the EAHE inlet-outlet air temperature, room temperature, and blower energy consumption were collected during the operational period from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Western Indonesian Time. The results revealed that the EAHE was able to significantly reduce ambient air temperature by up to 5.52°C and maintain a stable outlet temperature of 30-32°C. The system achieved a thermal effectiveness of 0.998 and a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 2.4, demonstrating excellent energy efficiency. Economic analysis showed that the blower energy consumption was only 2,992 kWh/day with an operational cost of Rp 1,241/day, making EAHE an economical solution for a type 36 house. A soil depth of 0.8-1.0 m proved optimal with a temperature stability of 30-31°C. It was concluded that EAHE was significantly superior in stabilizing room temperature and creating thermal comfort compared to natural ventilation, especially under peak heat load conditions during the day. These findings support the implementation of EAHE as a sustainable passive cooling solution for low-cost housing in Indonesia's tropical climate.
