Abstract
Aspergillus sp. and Candida sp. are opportunistic fungi that can attack the respiratory tract of birds, including the lungs. This study aims to compare the percentage of Aspergillus sp. and Candida sp. fungal infections in the lungs of sparrows. A total of 25 sparrow lung samples were collected from residential areas. Fungal identification was carried out using the culture method on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) media and microscopic observation of colony and spore morphology. The results showed that 25 lung samples from sparrows (Passer montanus) examined, 8 samples (32%) were positive for Aspergillus sp. fungi infection, 2 samples (8%) were positive for Candida sp. fungi infection, 13 samples (52%) were co-infected or positive for both fungi and 2 samples (8%) were negative for both or one of the fungi. These results indicate that the infection rate of Aspergillus sp. is higher than Candida sp. in the sparrows studied. This difference is thought to be related to the higher sporulation ability of Aspergillus sp. and the spread of spores that are easily inhaled into the respiratory tract. This study provides important information regarding the potential of sparrows as carriers of pathogenic fungi in the respiratory system that can have implications for human health and surrounding animals. The conclusion of this study from 25 lung samples of sparrows (Passer montanus) examined, as many as 8 samples (32%) were positive for Aspergillus sp. 2 samples (8%) were positive for Candida sp. 13 samples (52%) were co-infected or positive for both fungi and 2 samples (8%) were negative for both of the fungi so that there is a difference in the percentage of Aspergillus sp. and Candida sp. infections in sparrows (Passer montanus).
