Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a complex metabolic disorder marked by elevated blood glucose levels caused by disturbances in insulin secretion or action. Persistent hyperglycemia may impair salivary gland function, leading to a reduction in salivary flow rate. Red ginger (Zingiber Officinale var. rubrum) contains active compounds such as gingerol and shogaol, which are known for their antioxidant properties and their potential to stimulate salivary secretion. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gargling with red ginger decoction on salivary flow rate among patients with controlled and uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus. Using a pretest–posttest design, salivary flow was assessed through the spitting method before and after the gargling intervention. Data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The findings with Wilcoxon signed rank (p < 0.05) demonstrated a significant increase in salivary flow rate following the red ginger gargle in both controlled and uncontrolled diabetic groups. These results suggest that red ginger decoction may serve as a simple, natural approach to enhance salivary secretion and maintain oral health in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
