Abstract
Compulsive buying disorder (CBD) is a behavioral condition marked by excessive and impulsive urges to shop, accompanied by difficulties in self-control that can negatively affect financial stability and psychological well-being. Stress levels are considered one of the contributing factors to CBD. This study aims to examine the relationship between stress levels and compulsive buying disorder among female students at the Faculty of Dentistry, Syiah Kuala University. An analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design was applied. The sample consisted of 147 female students from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 cohorts selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected from 19 August to 18 September 2025 using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) to measure stress levels and the Edward Compulsive Buying Scale to assess compulsive buying disorder. Results indicated that most respondents who experienced CBD were 20 years old (36.3%), from the 2023 cohort (38.6%), lived in boarding houses (54.5%), and had a family history of shopaholic behavior (59.09%). The majority of participants reported moderate stress levels (74.8%). A total of 44 respondents (30%) were identified as having compulsive buying disorder. Spearman rank correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between stress levels and compulsive buying disorder, with a correlation coefficient of r = 0.378 (p = 0.001; p < 0.05), indicating a moderate correlation. This study concludes that higher stress levels are significantly associated with a greater tendency toward compulsive buying disorder among female dental students, suggesting that shopping may function as a temporary coping mechanism for academic stress.
