Abstract
Stenotrophomonas maltophilia is a Gram-negative opportunistic bacterium that causes nosocomial infections, particularly in patients with the use of invasive medical devices. Local data regarding its distribution and antibiotic susceptibility remain limited. This study aimed to determine the distribution and antibiotic sensitivity of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia based on clinical specimens, age, sex, and hospital wards at Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital, Banda Aceh. This research employed a laboratory observational method with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected retrospectively from the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory of Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital from January 2021 to May 2025, and prospectively from June to August 2025. The bacteria were isolated on MacConkey Agar media, followed by identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing using the automated VITEK® 2 Compact system. The study identified 89 isolates of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. The highest frequency distribution based on clinical specimens was found in sputum 30.33%, followed by endotracheal tube (ETT) specimens 28.08% and urine 13.48%. Based on sex and age, the majority were males 76.19% within the age range of 40–59 as much 32.58%. Distribution by hospital ward showed the highest prevalence in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) 21.34%. The antibiotic susceptibility test for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia detected only one type of antibiotic, namely levofloxacin. The results showed that 79.78% of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates remained sensitive to levofloxacin. Keywords: Antibiotics, sensitivity, clinical specimens, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia
