Abstract

One of the local motifs with high cultural value is the Sigupai Rice motif from West Aceh (Abdya), which symbolizes farmers' prosperity and has been designated as the region's signature motif. Although this motif has been widely applied to various products such as clothing, bags, and hats, it has not yet been applied to mukena products as Muslim women's fashion. This study aims to develop the Padi Sigupai motif design for mukena products, conduct the mukena production process with the Padi Sigupai motif development, and determine the informants' appeal toward the Padi Sigupai motif development using embroidery techniques on mukena products. The research type is an applied experiment with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of five individuals: three embroidery artisans and two staff members of the Abdya District Craft Council (Dekranas). The object of this study was mukena featuring the Padi Sigupai motif using embroidery techniques. Data collection was conducted through applied experiments and interviews. Data analysis techniques in this study were carried out using several components, including data reduction, data presentation, verification, and conclusions. The research results on the development of the Padi Sigupai motif design on mukena products align with the expected motif and form, are suitable for the intended theme, and have a proportional appearance. The production of mukena with the development of the Sigupai rice motif resulted in two mukena products, the “Sigupai Series,” each with its own distinctive characteristics. The first series uses a dark red-purple (burgundy) base color with Sigupai rice embroidery motifs placed on the front to the bottom of the mukena to make them easily visible and give a luxurious impression. Meanwhile, the second mukena series was developed with a more minimalist design using a white base color combined with golden yellow Padi Sigupai embroidery motifs arranged evenly, along with pleats on the lower sides of the mukena, giving it a clean and elegant appearance. Research on informants' attraction to the development of the Padi Sigupai motif using embroidery techniques on mukena products shows that all informants liked the mukena with the Padi Sigupai embroidery motif because it has functionality and unique visual appeal, reflects local cultural values, and can enhance appreciation for regional craft products.
