(an experimental study at smp negeri 17 banda aceh) keyword: speaking, snowball throwing model the is study intended to find out whether snowball throwing model improves the students’ speaking skill at the second grade of smp negeri 17 banda aceh or not . quantitative approach with experimental study of one group pre-test post-test design was undertaken to overcome the problems faced by the students in teaching speaking skill. the instrument used to collect the data was oral test. in addition to analyzing the data, the writer used some statistical formula. the finding shows that, the mean score in the post test was increased compared to the mean score in the pre -test. in the pre-test the mean score was 39.8, and in the post test was 66,2. furthermore, t-test was 4,680 and t-table was 2,060. ha was accepted and ho was rejected. based on the result on this research, in can be conclude that teaching speaking by using snowball throwing model can improve the students in speaking skill
