Abstract
The phenomenon of juvenile delinquency among adolescents is becoming increasingly alarming in Banda Aceh, a city known for its religious nature. One of the factors that have a significant role in the increase in deviant behavior is self-control. Adolescents with high self-control tend to be able to control negative impulses when facing social and emotional pressures during their developmental transition. This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-control and juvenile delinquency among high school students in Banda Aceh. The study employs a quantitative correlational using stratified random sampling techniques. The sample consisted of 344 high school students aged 15–18 years from several schools in Banda Aceh. The instruments used were the Self-Reported Delinquency (SRD) by Elliott & Ageton (1980) and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) by Tangney et al., (2004). Data analysis was performed using Pearson's correlation test through the JASP program. The results showed that the majority of students (75.58%) were classified as having high juvenile delinquency, and 99.13% were in the low self-control category. There was a significant negative correlation between self-control and juvenile delinquency (r = –0.387; p < 0.005). This means that the higher the students' self-control, the lower their tendency to engage in deviant behavior. Although valid instruments were used and the sample size was adequate, this study did not consider external factors such as family and peers. These findings emphasize the importance of developing self-control as a preventive measure against juvenile delinquency.
