Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana penerapan strategi generating interaction between schemata and text (gist) dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa kelas x di sman 1 baitussalam. permasalahan utama yang diangkat adalah rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam mengidentifikasi gagasan pokok, memahami struktur teks, serta menyusun ringkasan yang tepat. metode yang digunakan adalah eksperimen kuantitatif dengan desain one-group pretest-posttest yang melibatkan 20 siswa sebagai subjek penelitian. data dikumpulkan melalui tes membaca pemahaman, kemudian dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensial menggunakan uji paired sample t-test untuk mengetahui adanya peningkatan signifikan terhadap kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa setelah penerapan strategi gist. hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan strategi gist mampu meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman siswa, yang dibuktikan dengan peningkatan skor rata-rata setelah perlakuan. temuan ini mendukung penggunaan strategi gist sebagai metode yang efektif dalam pembelajaran membaca, khususnya pada teks naratif di tingkat sekolah menengah atas. penelitian ini diharapkan dapat berkontribusi terhadap pengembangan metode pembelajaran inovatif, khususnya strategi membaca, yang efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa. kata kunci: strategi gist, skemata, membaca pemahaman, penelitian eksperimental



Abstract

The Implementation of Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) Strategy in Improving Students' Reading Comprehension (An Experimental Study at SMAN 1 Baitussalam). [Undergraduate Thesis. Universitas Syiah Kuala]. Under the supervision of Dr. Dohra Fitrisia, S.Pd., M.Ed., and Tgk. Maya Silvianti, S.Pd., MA. This study aims to determine how the Generating Interaction between Schemata and Text (GIST) Strategy improves reading comprehension of grade X students at SMAN 1 Baitussalam. The main problem raised is the low ability of students to identify main ideas, understand text structures, and compile accurate summaries. The method used is a quantitative experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 20 students as research subjects. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests, then analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistical tests using paired sample t-tests to determine a significant increase in students' reading comprehension after the implementation of the GIST strategy. The results showed that the implementation of the GIST strategy was able to improve students' reading comprehension skills, as evidenced by the increase in average scores after treatment. These findings support the use of the GIST strategy as an effective method in teaching reading, especially in narrative texts at the high school level. This study is expected to contribute to the development of innovative learning methods, especially in reading strategies, and is effective in improving students' reading comprehension.
