Abstract

Effect Of Preoperative 0.05% Oxymetazoline HCl Nasal Spray on Intraoperative Visualization And Bleeding in Endoscopic Sinus Surgery At Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital Banda Aceh By: Oktaria Denantika ABSTRACT Background: Effective control of bleeding is crucial for optimal visualization during Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), especially in terms of operational surgical field. Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05% which is a decongestant nasal spray with vasoconstriction effect, is believed to maximize the surgical field and reduce the loss of intraoperative bleeding. Objective: To determine the effect of Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05% nasal spray 1 hour preoperative on the visualization and amount of intraoperative bleeding of ESS at Banda Aceh Hospital. Methods: An Experimental study with a cross sectional design in ESS patients from June – November 2024. The sample group was sprayed with Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05% 1 hour preoperative and the control group's secondary data from medical records with as many as the sample group. Assessment of the visualization of the surgical field with the Boezaart scale and the amount of intraoperative bleeding by measuring the amount of blood stored in the suction tube and then subtracted by the amount of 0.9% NaCl fluid used during surgery. The data was analyzed using the Chi-Square test and the Mann whitney test. Results: Analysis of 30 cases demonstrated that preoperative administration of Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05% nasal spray significantly improved surgical field visualization (p=0.000) and reduced intraoperative blood loss (p=0.000). Conclusion: Preoperative use of Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05% nasal spray enhances surgical field clarity and significantly decreases bleeding during ESS. Keyword: Endoscopic sinus surgery, Oxymetazoline HCl 0.05%, Boezaart Scale
