Abstract
Sultan Iskandar Muda (SIM) Airport is an international airport that plays a crucial role in supporting connectivity and economic growth in Aceh Province. With the progression of time and the dynamics of climate change, evaluating the orientation of the runway becomes essential to ensure flight safety and operational efficiency. The existing runway 17/35, constructed in 1943, has been in use for decades without significant reassessment regarding prevailing wind patterns. This study aims to evaluate the suitability of the current runway orientation at SIM Airport in relation to the dominant wind patterns, based on ten years of historical data (2013–2022). The methodology includes windrose analysis to identify dominant wind directions and speeds, as well as runway coverage calculations to assess compliance with ICAO standards. Results show that dominant winds originate from the west and northeast sectors, with speeds ranging from 3.6 to 8.8 m/s. The existing runway (17/35) achieves only 91.52% coverage, falling below the (International Civil Aviation Organization) ICAO minimum threshold of 95%. An alternative runway orientation of 08/26 yields a coverage of 98.91%. The required runway length for the critical aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER, is calculated to be approximately 3,500 meters. These findings support the recommendation to realign the runway orientation to enhance safety and operational efficiency, and to serve as a foundation for future airport infrastructure planning. Keywords; runway orientation, runway coverage, crosswind, windrose
