Abstract

Bullying is a prevalent issue in educational settings and is closely associated with psychological conditions such as anxiety, stress, and depression among adolescents. However, few studies have examined these associations across different school types. This comparative cross-sectional study aimed to explore the differences in bullying levels and their associations with anxiety, stress, and depression among students in Islamic boarding schools (IBS) and non-Islamic boarding schools (NBS) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. A total of 296 students were selected through multistage random sampling, and data were collected using the Form of Bullying Scale (FBS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21). Bivariate analysis showed significant differences between IBS and NBS students in bullying (p = 0.039), anxiety (p < 0.001), stress (p < 0.001), and depression (p = 0.001). Simple logistic regression indicated that in IBS, anxiety, stress, and depression were significantly associated with gender and bullying level (p < 0.05). In NBS, anxiety was related to gender, parental income, and bullying; stress was associated with gender and bullying; and depression was linked to gender and bullying. Multivariate analysis revealed that in IBS, gender was the factor most closely associated with anxiety (AOR = 6.889) and stress (AOR = 4.604), while bullying was most associated with depression (AOR = 3.901). In NBS, bullying showed the strongest association with anxiety (AOR = 8.752) and depression (AOR = 2.688), while gender was most associated with stress (AOR = 4.529). These findings suggest that female gender was the factor most related to anxiety and stress in both school types, while high-intensity bullying was most associated with depression.
