Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is a plant that is widely used traditionally as a medicine in Indonesia. Essential oil is one of the main components of C. citratus that has been shown to have pharmacological activities, one of which is anti-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to test the anti-inflammatory activity of essential oil from the aerial part of C. citratus. Essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation method and characterization was done through organoleptic test and chemical compound analysis using GC-MS instrument. Anti-inflammatory activity test was conducted using ELISA method through prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) inhibition in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 cells. The results of this study showed that C. citratus essential oil has a percent yield of 0.492%, in the form of clear liquid, pale yellow in color, with a distinctive fresh aroma. GC-MS results show that C. citratus essential oil consists of 51 types of compounds and is dominated by trans citral (34.77%), cis-citral (20.61%), alpha-chamipinene (6.82%) and neric acid (4.49%). Anti-inflammatory activity test showed that at concentrations of 3.125, 6.25, 12.5, 25 and 50 ug/mL, C. citratus essential oil did not inhibit PGE2 in RAW264.7 cells. This occurred due to several factors in the testing process.
