Aisyah Khairina, ISOLASI DAN IDENTIFIKASI BAKTERI STREPTOCOCCUS β-HEMOLISIS PADA LUKA KUDA (EQUUS CABALLUS). Banda Aceh Fakultas FKH,2025

Abstract

Streptococcus β-hemolysis is a bacterium capable of lysing red blood cells and is generally pathogenic, known to cause strangles in horses. This study aimed to identify the presence of Streptococcus β-hemolysis in wounds on horses caused by the use of accessories in Aceh Besar District. The research was conducted at the Microbiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Syiah Kuala University, from December 2024 to January 2025. Samples were obtained by swabbing wounds from four horses collected from three stables in Aceh Besar District. This study employed a cross sectional study design. Bacterial isolation and identification were carried out using a modified version of the Carter (1987) method, utilizing Nutrient Broth (NB) and Blood Agar Plate (BA) media. Bacterial identification was performed through Gram staining, catalase test, and hemolysis test. The results showed that one out of four samples tested positive for Streptococcus β hemolysis. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Streptococcus β-hemolysis can be isolated from 25% of horses with wounds in Aceh Besar District.
