This script is entitled the application of retelling story ass an authentic assessment in understanding narrative text " . the purpose of this study is to find out whether using retelling story as an authentic assent gives better impact in improving students performance in reading. unlike the traditional assessment, authentic is kind of assessment which focuses not only the product but also on the authentic assessment the wry the teacher teaches also the way the teacher assent the study. retelling story, in this type of the assessment, students read or listen to the text and then retell the main ideas or details of the elected. this type of assessment is authenthic because ti is based on or closely resembles the actual classroom activities. this study found that the application of retelling story as an authentic assessment in understanding narrative text provides some systematic steps to improve students' comprehension in reading students are higly motivated and pleased during teaching and learning process. based on the research findings and experts' statements, it is found that the retelling story as an authentic assessment is appropriate to improve students performance in reading.
