Abstract

The sambar deer (Cervus univolor) is a protected species whose population is endangered, primarily due to poaching and other human activities. Conservation efforts through ex-situ conservation, such as breeding programs, are crucial to prevent the extinction of this species. This study aims to analyze the daily behavior of sambar deer at Sibreh Deer Park in Aceh Besar Regency and to identify behavioral differences based on sex and age. The method used was focal animal sampling with 5-minute intervals, encompassing all existing sambar deer. The results indicate that over 16 days of observation, ingestive behavior was dominant, with 2,265 minutes per day, followed by resting behavior (2,245 minutes/day), locomotion (1,780 minutes/day), eliminative behavior (130 minutes/day), and social behavior (260 minutes/day), while sexual behavior was not observed. Behavioral variation among individuals was influenced by sex, age, activity, and environmental temperature in the enclosure.
