Abstract

Bromodosis is a condition where there is more than normal foot odor. This problem can reduce self-confidence and disrupt one's appearance. Bromodosis is caused by bacteria including Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis. This study aims to formulate foot spray preparation from citronella essential oil and measure the antibacterial activity against S. epidermidis and B. subtilis. The characterization results of citronella essential oil are light yellow, typical citronella aroma, refractive index 1.4695, specific gravity 0.879, and 1:2 clear in 80% ethanol. The results of GC MS analysis of citronella essential oil contain the highest active compounds, namely citronellal 48.80%, citronellol 15.74%, and geraniol 7.26%. The results of the antibacterial activity test of citronella essential oil at concentration of 6.25% produced an inhibition zone of 12.26 mm against S. epidermidis and 11.38 mm against B. subtilis. The results of the formulation of foot spray were evaluated and found that formula F0 without citronella essential oil and F1 citronella essential oil 6.25% met the quality requirements of all tests, while F2 citronella essential oil 12.5% did not meet the quality requirements in organoleptic testing there was a color change after cycling test. The results of hedonic testing F2 were more favored by panelists. The results of antibacterial activity test of foot spray preparations from citronella essential oil are best in F2 with an inhibition zone of 14.86 mm against S. epidermidis and 12.53 mm against B. subtilis. The conclusion of this study is that citronella essential oil has potential as an antibacterial, can be formulated in the form of a foot spray that meet all the quality requirements of good topical preparations in F0 and F1, but F2 is most preferred by panelists, and foot spray preparations from citronella essential oil have potential as antibacterial and bromodosis remover.
