Abstract name : husmarnila students no. : 1106102110040 study program : english education title : improving students ability in reading descriptive text by using think pair and share (tps) (a classroom action research at grade viii, semester 1, smpn 1 sawang) ____________________________________________________________________ keyword:... reading is a skill which is something difficult for junior high school students to master. generally students’ difficulty in reading is affected by their ability of understanding a text content. this is caused by student lack of vocabulary and their impression of reading as a boring subject. the researcher, in order to solve such a problem, tried to find an appropriate method or technique. one of the techniques is called think pair and share ( tps ). this research aims to improve the students reading skill in understanding a descriptive text at grade vii of smpn 1 sawang by using think pair and share. this cooperative learning technique encourages students to be more active when learning in the classroom. this classroom action research was conducted in two cycles. when the researcher was in progress, the students average score in cycle i was 64.38, and it increased to be 70.61 in cycle ii. these two scores proved that the implementation of think pair and share could successfully improved the students’ skill in understanding a descriptive text. this also indicated that the hypothesis of action of this research could be accepted. based on the result of this classroom action research, it is suggested to english teachers to implement think pair and share technique as an alternative for teaching reading.
