Abstract

This research aims to synthesize and characterize copper colloids immobilized on abaca banana fiber (Musa textilis) in a PVA matrix and properties its antibacterial. Copper salts mixed with PVA solution are reduced to copper colloid. Copper colloids were immobilized on abaca banana fibers. Good fiber copper composite and the biofilm part that is between the composite fibers The antibacterial properties were tested against E. coli. The XRF test results show that the presence of Cu elements was 99.461% and CuO compounds were 99.826%. Test SEM shows that Cu is relatively distributed on the surface of the abaca fiber. Cu interactions with PVA, it is proven that Cu-O absorption is in the absorption band areas 525.62 and 629.79 cm-1 . The typical Cu-OH spectrum is found in the absorption bands 3773.85 and 3697.70 cm-1 , Cu colloidal impregnated abaca fiber has antibacterial properties on the sample SA+PVA+Cu has an average inhibition zone of 11.40 mm and the inhibition zone of the sample SA+PVA+Cu+chitosan with an average of 12.24 mm. When the Cu colloid is replaced with commercial Cu powder, the average inhibition zone is 14.65 mm. The results of the biofilm between Cu-composite abaca fibers were good in the presence and absence of chitosan shows antibacterial properties, so it can be concluded that it has antibacterial properties only present in Cu-composite fibers and does not protect the biofilm more wide. Key words: Abaca fiber, Cu colloid, Biofilm
