Abstract munawar, 2014. improving students’ speaking skill through learning community: a classroom action research at sman 1 peulimbang bireuen. thesis, syiah kuala university. advisors: (1) abdul gani asyik. m.a, ph.d (2) abdul manan m.sc, m.a, ph.d key words: learning community, speaking skill. this thesis entitles “improving students’ speaking skill through learning community.” the subject of the study was the students of class xi/ips at sma negeri 1 peulimbang. this study belongs to a collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher and collaborator discussed and worked together in planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. the action research was carried out into two cycles, and every cycle was conducted in three meetings. the data was collected by using observation sheet, students’ self assessment of participation in groups, and questionnaire. the obtained data were then presented and analyzed in a qualitative and quantitative data procedure. qualitative data was presented in words explaining the process of implementing the strategy, while quantitative data was analyzed by using a simple percentage formula. based on the result of the teacher’s observation sheet in cycle 1, there were also some aspects of the teacher’s activities that should be redesigned since the teacher did not fully conduct the activities according to the lesson plan. based on the result of the data analysis in cycle 1, there were several aspects of the students’ activities that were still far from the required criteria. furthermore, the result of the questionnaire that is related to the students’ response towards the implementation of learning community reveals that the students have very good responses toward the implementation of the learning community, the result shows that 29(90%) of the students like the classroom situation, 32(96,67%) can follow the step of the teacher in explaining the lesson, 28(86, 67%) like the teachers’ way of teaching, 28(86,67%) of the students were interested to the topic of the materials, 29(90%) of them want to follow the teaching-learning process using the same way of technique, 29 (90%) of the students like the technique applied in the classroom, 26(80%) of them like the media used by the teacher. in addition, the students’ self assessment of participation in groups aimed to evaluate the students’ own progress in learning or how well they performed the task.
