Abstract
ABSTRACT Background Congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) is a collection of symptoms caused by infection with the rubella virus during pregnancy. It is characterized by a classic triad of clinical manifestations in the form of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), ocular abnormalities, and congenital heart disease (CHD). Cardiovascular abnormalities are often found as manifestations of CRS, followed by other clinical manifestations. CRS diagnosis is established through anamnesis, physical examination, and supporting examinations. A definitive diagnosis of CRS is based on anti-rubella serology results. Objective This study aims to understand the relationship between congenital heart disease and positive rubella antibody serology confirmation in suspected congenital rubella syndrome. Methods The study used secondary data from medical records of children younger than 12 months old at Dr. Zainoel Abidin Hospital Banda Aceh. The data collected were from the period of 2019-2021. Result One hundred and seventeen subjects met the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with 60 female (51%) subjects. Ninety-four subjects (80%) were born at aterm from women with maternal ages between 20-40 years old. The rubella serology examination resulted in eighteen (15%) positive results. Eighty-seven subjects had CHD (75%), followed by other clinical manifestations. Of the 87 subjects with CHD, fifty subjects (58%) had two heart defects and fifteen (83%) had positive serology results. The analysis shows a significant relationship between CHD events and positive anti-rubella serology confirmation (p-value 0.018). Conclusion There is a significant relationship between the clinical manifestation of CRS and CHD with a positive result of a rubella antibody serology test. Keywords: CRS, Rubella serology, CHD
