Jaringan komputer sangat penting dalam menunjang kegiatan para guru dan staff, terutama untuk sarana mengirim file dan diskusi, namun pada jaringan mtsn 8 aceh besar hanya memiliki satu jalur akses antar switch, selain itu juga dengan hanya satu jalur akses jika terjadinya kegagalan atau mati maka satu switch akan kehilangan jaringan. peranan jaringan redundant merupakan solusi yang tepat untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut. dengan dibuatnya jaringan redundant dapat mengganti jalur utama yang mati. pada jaringan redundant di terapkan sistem spanning tree protocol dalam tiga vlan (virtual local area network) yang merupakan sekumpulan dari device pada sebuah jaringan lan yang dikonfigurasi menggunakan management software, sehingga bisa berkomunikasi jika device tersebut terhubung pada kabel yang sama dan dilokasikan pada jumlah segment lan yang berbeda. hal ini dapat terjadi karena bekerjanya vlan berdasarkan pada logical connection dari pada physical connection serta sangat fleksibel. spanning tree protocol atau yang sering disingkat dengan stp adalah link layer network protocol yang menjamin tidak adanya loop dalam topologi dari banyak bridge/switch dalam lan. spanning tree memperbolehkan desain jaringan memiliki redundan link untuk membuat jalur backup otomatis jika sebuah link aktif gagal bekerja, tanpa adanya bahaya dari loop pada bridge/switch. kata kunci : virtual local area network, local area network, spanning tree protocol, switch, broadcast storm

Spanning tree allows network designs having redundant links to create automatic backup paths if an active link fails, without the danger of bridge/switch loops.
