Aulia Akmal, HUBUNGAN KARAKTERISTIK PASIEN DAN DIABETES SELF-CARE MANAGEMENT DENGAN DIABETIC PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY PADA PASIEN DM TIPE 2 DI RUMAH SAKIT UMUM DAERAH MEURAXA BANDA ACEH. Banda Aceh Fakultas Keperawatan,2022

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) causes microvascular and macrovascular complications. One of the microvascular complications is loss of sensation in the leg area (peripheral neuropathy) which has an impact on the occurrence of foot ulcers and the risk of amputation. This study attempted to examine the relationship between patient characteristics and diabetes self-care management (DSCM) with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 DM patients at Meuraxa Hospital of Banda Aceh. This study is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional study design. 154 type-2 DM patients were selected as the research participants using a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Diabetes Self Care Activities-Revised (SDSCA), a modified Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), and a Michigan Diabetic Neuropathy Score (MDNS) were used as the instruments in the data collection. The data were analized using statistical descriptive tests, i.e. Chi-Square and logistic regression. The results of this research showed sub-variables related to DPN, including age , duration of DM , history of comorbidities , HbA1c. The most dominant sub-variables related to the incidence of DPN were age. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that age is a determining factor for the occurrence of DPN in type 2 DM patients. Therefore, early detection and good self-care are needed to prevent further complications.
