Di universitas syiah kuala pada program studi pendidikan bahasa inggris, salah satu keterampilan berbahasa yang diajarkan adalah berbicara. kelas berbicara diajarkan oleh guru penutur asli (nest) dan guru non-penutur asli (nnests). penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa terhadap nests dan nnests dalam pengajaran berbicara mengenai kompetensi mengajar guru, gaya mengajar, manajemen kelas, pengetahuan budaya, dan aspek pribadi guru (kasai, lee, & kim, 2011). berdasarkan data yang dikumpulkan dan dianalisis dari kuesioner dan wawancara terhadap 20 mahasiswa tahun ajaran 2017 dan 2018 jurusan bahasa inggris, universitas syiah kuala, diketahui bahwa mahasiswa memberikan respon positif terhadap nest. siswa berpikir bahwa nest menciptakan kelas yang santai dan kreatif, menggunakan berbagai teknik dan metode, lebih berpengetahuan dan memiliki kemungkinan untuk menjadi sumber utama informasi budaya untuk negara-negara berbahasa inggris. namun, nest buruk dalam menjelaskan tata bahasa. meskipun nnests menggunakan teknik pengajaran yang kurang menarik sehingga membuat kelas menjadi monoton, namun siswa percaya bahwa nnests lah yang mampu memahami kebutuhan belajarnya, lebih mampu mengantisipasi kesulitan belajar siswa dan empati terhadap masalah belajar siswa.

Abstract
In Universitas Syiah Kuala at Study Program of English Education, one of the language skills taught is speaking. The speaking classes are taught by both Native English Speaking Teachers (NEST) and Non-Native English Speaking Teachers (NNESTs). This research aims to investigate the students’ perception toward NESTs and NNESTs in teaching speaking regarding the teachers’ teaching competence, teaching style, classroom management, cultural knowledge, and teachers’ personal aspect (Kasai, Lee, & Kim, 2011). Based on data collected and analyzed from questionnaires and interviews of 20 students from the academic year 2017 and 2018 of English Department, Syiah Kuala Univesity, it was discovered that the students responded positively to NESTs. The Students think that NESTs create a relaxed and creative class, uses a wide variety of techniques and methods, more knowledgeable and has the possibility to be a key source of cultural information for English-speaking countries. However, NESTs are poor at explaining grammar. Even though NNESTs use less attractive teaching techniques that make the class monotonous, students believe that NNESTs is the one who is able to understand their learning needs, more capable of anticipating students’ learning difficulties and empathy for students’ learning problems.
