Abstract

The Lampulo Marine Fishery Port is one of the centers for the fish trade and fishing industry in Banda Aceh which has the potential to experience pollution due to anthropological activities. Research on the concentration of heavy metal lead (Pb) and the use of Staphylococcus aureus as the bioremediation bacteria were conducted in December 2021. The location of the study was determined by the purposive sampling method. Furthermore, sediment and water samples were analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the concentration of heavy metal Pb ranged from 210.62 mg/Kg – 247.93 mg/Kg and 161.91 mg/L - 168.23 mg/L in sediment and water, respectively. Consequently, this result indicates that the Lampulo Marine Fishery Port is a heavily polluted area based on the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and the government regulators of Indonesia. On the other hand, we tried to reduce the concentration of heavy metal by applying the bioremediation method using S. aureus, a gram-positive bacteria. As a result, the concentrations of heavy metal Pb have been reduced from 210.62 mg/Kg – 247.93 mg/Kg to 0.72 mg/Kg – 2.72 mg/Kg and 161.91 mg/L - 168.23 mg/L to 0.18 mg/L – 1.55 mg/L in sediment and water, respectively. Therefore, the presence of S. aureus has been believed to play an important role in the reduction of heavy metal concentration.
