Abstract

Abstract Name : Rosmawati Student No. : 1806202020030 Study Program : Master Degree in English Education Department : English Education Title : The Implementation of Cornell Note Taking Strategy in Teaching Listening Comprehension (An Experimental Study of the 8th Grade Students of SMPN 1 Kota Fajar, South Aceh) Keywords: Listening Comprehension, Cornell Note Taking (CNT), Experimental Listening is one of four important English skills in Indonesia. However, this skill is rather being skipped than the other skills like reading, speaking and writing in the process of teaching English. Listening skill has not been given proper attention of the teachers in teaching learning English as a second or foreign language in secondary schools in Indonesia. Cornell Note Taking (CNT) strategy is considered to be effective to help the students in comprehending the information by taking a note while listening. Therefore, this research was carried out to find out the effect of students’ listening comprehension skill in understanding the purposes, main idea, detail information, and vocabulary of the spoken text after implementing the CNT Strategy. The method of this research is experimental design. The population of this research is all the students in the second grade of SMPN 1 Kota Fajar Aceh Selatan. The instruments used for this study were the pretest and posttest. The researcher used T-test formula in analyzing the data. The mean score of pretest of experimental class increases from 68, 3 to 92 where the improvement is 23,7. This derives from the result of pretest in the experimental class is 1025 while the posttest shows signifcant improvements 355 so it becomes 1380. The maximum score of pretest in experimental class is 85 while the minimum is 60. In the posttest, the highest score is 100 while the minimum is 85. The researcher concludes that there is a significant effect of using CNT strategy on the improvement of students’ listening comprehension. It is suggested for teachers to use this strategy for teaching listening skill.
