Keywords: Pragmatic, Illocutionary Acts, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret.
This study aimed at finding out the types of illocutionary acts and the most dominant illocutionary acts used by the main character in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret movie. A descriptive qualitative study was undertaken by observing the utterances spoken by the main character in the movie based on Searle’s theory (1969). The results of the study showed that there were four types of illocutionary acts found in the movie: representative, directive, expressive, and commissive. The most frequently illocutionary acts used by the main character is directive (47.64%), while the least frequent used is commissive (4.19%). The illocutionary forces used by the main character were varied. The most dominant illocutionary forces used by the main character were asking (45 data) whereas agreeing, concluding, reminding, complimenting, dislike, pain, worrying, annoyed, afraid, angry, surprised, pleading, insisting, refusing and wishing become the least produced forces (each of them has only 1 datum).
